Regular physical activity has well-established physical and mental health benefits. The World Health Organization notes that activity can support cardiovascular and metabolic health, brain health, overall wellbeing and reductions in symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Where movement takes place may matter too. Systematic reviews comparing physical activity in natural environments with indoor or more urban settings have reported promising effects on outcomes such as positive affect, energy, anxiety, fatigue and enjoyment. The evidence is not uniform, and several reviews note limitations in study quality, sample size and methods. The clearest case is therefore not that outdoor movement is a medical treatment, but that natural settings may add psychological value to an already beneficial behaviour.
This matters because the architecture of everyday movement is changing. People increasingly train at home, on terraces, in gardens, at holiday houses and in hospitality environments. Yet much specialist equipment still assumes a permanent indoor room.
Designing for a wider horizon
Elemental was founded around the idea that the apparatus should follow the body rather than define the room. TerraFold™ uses an aluminium and composite structure, marine-grade ropes, outdoor powder coating and yacht-grade upholstery so it can move between interiors and considered outdoor settings. Its folding architecture allows a living space or terrace to return to another use after practice.
Pebble™ applies the same principle at a smaller scale. Made from 100% EPP, it is lightweight, unupholstered and moisture-resistant, making it easy to move between reformer and mat work, indoors or outside.
Elemental recommends protected or covered outdoor placement where possible and care suited to the environment. Outdoor-minded does not mean maintenance-free; sun, salt, humidity and weather remain real material conditions.
