You need more space for a Pilates reformer than the machine's listed footprint. Plan for the reformer's full operating dimensions plus enough clearance to get on and off, move your arms and legs beyond the frame, change springs and safely access both ends. If the reformer folds, measure its stored footprint too.

How do you measure a room for a Pilates reformer?
- Find the manufacturer's maximum operating length and width.
- Mark that rectangle on the floor with removable tape.
- Lie or kneel beside it and move through reaching, side-lying and standing positions to see where your body extends beyond the frame.
- Check that you can reach both ends to change springs and adjust the footbar.
- If the reformer folds, mark its stored footprint and where it will live between sessions.
Why isn't the reformer footprint enough?
A reformer is not used like a bed or console table. Your body regularly extends beyond its frame. A tight alcove may fit the equipment but restrict exercise selection, spring changes or safe transitions.

Worked example: planning around TerraFold™
TerraFold™ measures 265 cm long × 60.5 cm wide when open. That rectangle is your starting point; add clearance on each side for your limbs and at both ends for access. When folded, TerraFold™ stands 136 cm high × 84 cm wide × 76 cm deep, which is roughly the floor area of an armchair. At 92 kg assembled, also check your lift, corridor and doorway dimensions before delivery. Always use the current fact sheet dimensions when planning.
What else should you measure?
- Doorways, corridors and lifts used during delivery
- Ceiling height where relevant to your intended repertoire
- Access to both ends of the reformer
- Space for straps, boxes such as Pebble™ and other accessories
- The floor surface and levelness
- The stored dimensions if the reformer folds or moves
Can a Pilates reformer work in a small apartment?
Yes, if you plan around both use and storage. A dedicated machine may dominate a small room, while a foldable Pilates reformer can return floor area when practice is finished. Compare actual open and stored dimensions rather than relying on labels such as “compact.”
Should you put a reformer against a wall?
Only if the position leaves the working clearance required for your intended exercises and follows the manufacturer's setup guidance. A wall can restrict side access and limb movement even when the frame itself fits.
What is the best room for a home reformer?
The best location is level, easy to access and large enough that you do not need to compromise normal movement around the apparatus. Good ventilation, natural light and a surface compatible with the equipment also help. In many Australian and Singaporean homes, a covered terrace or living area that opens to the outdoors can work well when the equipment is designed for it; see Can You Keep a Pilates Reformer Outdoors?
Does a foldable reformer save space?
It saves space between sessions. The key distinction is between storage footprint and working footprint. A foldable machine still needs adequate room when fully open.

Home reformer space FAQs
Can I keep a reformer in a living room?
Yes, if the floor, clearance and access are suitable. Consider how the equipment affects circulation through the room when it is open and stored.
Do I need a dedicated Pilates room?
No. A multipurpose room can work well if you can create adequate working clearance for each session.
How long is a Pilates reformer?
Full-scale reformers are typically well over two metres long when open. TerraFold™ is 265 cm long and 60.5 cm wide. Always check the specific model.
Should I measure before ordering?
Yes. Measure the room, delivery route and intended storage configuration against the manufacturer's current dimensions.
